Yesterday, Mum and I went to see The Artist at DCA and I have to say, it was brilliant! I did fancy seeing it, but I don't know that I would have actually gone to the movies if Mum hadn't insisted on going. I'm so glad she did, because I thoroughly enjoyed it; the story, the cast, the cinematography, they had obviously been so well considered because the film was seamless and totally clear.

Of course, I loved seeing all the costumes and fashions of the late Twenties (I love that it was an era of dressing up; even at the breakfast table, the men wore smart pyjama suits with silk "coats", while women wore long, silk slips teamed with immaculate hair) but my favourite screen shot would have to be more film orientated (my film studies always kicks in!).

So, I loved most the scene where the lead male and female actors stop and talk on the stairs in the film studio building: the camera moves back from the shot so that you can see all three flights of stairs from a side angle. You watch people hurrying up and down the stairs like ants running around carrying out important business, while the stairwell brought the centre shot completely into focus. It was perfectly framed and the shot lasted long enough to really enjoy the movement and take in how impressive the industrial style staircase was, without time dragging on to make you lose interest.

The film is (mostly) silent, and shot in black and white. The cast were fantastic (including Uggie, the canine star of the show!) and commanded the attention of the audience and they told the story easily - despite only "mugging" at the camera!

Peppy Miller was played by Berenice Bejo and she was just excellent. Bejo completely embodied Miller's fun spirit that was evident from the start of the film: her dancing, her over acting, her cheeky smile and her kind heart were all rolled into a flirty, playful persona who also happens to be gorgeous.

If you haven't seen it, or aren't even planning to see it - go! It's worth seeing on the big screen. I'd recommend going to an evening show before a fancy dinner. Dress up to the nines - the film is set in such a glamorous era and the glamour is infectious: so put your glad rags on and hit the town!

Eleven Paris

Ash Stymest (fashion's favourite London wild child; starred in Galliano campaigns; has appeared in Dazed & Confused, Attitude and Vogue Homme Japan, among others) and Tali Lennox (one of Britain's hottest new models; daughter of Annie; has walked for Prada, Cavalli, Missoni and starred in the coveted Burberry campaign) are the new faces of Parisian brand, Eleven Paris.

The Eleven Paris SS12 campaign images (which were shot by the very controversial photographer, Terry Richardson) show the two Brits having what looks to be an awesome time with each other while rocking the Parisian label's ready-to-wear looks. The new collection draws inspiration from the "myriad of styles that have evolved as a result of political, social and economic revolution of Berlin." For menswear, the look is laid back but edgy thanks to the sharp cut, while for womenswear, the collection is oversized on top with straight trousers and fitted skirts; the entire collection is a marvellous mash-up of grunge and kooky and is totally "now". Stymest and Lennox do a fantastic job of merging British eccentricity with Parisian effortlessness as they show off a very cool collection - the perfect combination for luring impressionable, young trend-chasers but also for providing more mature customers with some solid wardrobe staples.

Love is a Funny Thing

It seems my last blog post was taken in the wrong context by the person I wanted most to understand, so I thought I should be clear on the message I had tried to send in the last post - hence another post!

Mr Man told me that he feels sad that I’ve given up on him. I feel sad because the point is that I haven’t given up on him; I just realised yesterday that a wedding day is a by-product of marriage, not the crux. If Mr Man does ever propose, the important thing to me is to say (and mean) our vows, to sign the lawful document that would make us man and wife, and to exchange a wee symbol of love while celebrating together with our closest family and friends.

(And enjoy some Champagne and yummy food, of course!)

The Big Day

Today I spent the day in a wedding dress. I wasn't getting married, there was no groom waiting for me - this day was basically not about my love but rather, every one else's: I was at a wedding fayre.

I was asked by Kirsty (she does fabulous make-up, for any brides-to-be out there) to help out at The Apex's wedding fayre and for a couple of reasons, I decided I would seize the opportunity to wear a bridal gown because, after 10 years with Mr Man, I have given up hope of having the big day that every little girl dreams of.

Upon arrival, Kirsty did my make-up (thanks love!) and I took time to look at the different stalls for flowers, cars, kilts, cake bakers, jewellers and even a sweetie cart (great for favours). I met a few of the other girls who were helping out by wearing dresses (a couple of very young girls, a bride-to-be and a couple of newbies like me - hi Paula and Dominique!) and then went upstairs to (literally) dive into my dress. Lynn from bridal boutique, Diane Lynn, was providing the dresses to compliment her stall and she manoeuvred me into what one might describe as the largest meringue you have ever seen, with extremely dated shoulder straps. To say I felt overwhelmed would be an understatement. I wore the dress for around two hours (which gained a very mixed response from the fayre-goers) and then I changed into another dress, strapless this time and, incredibly, even bigger than the first. I wasn't just a meringue - I was a meringue, supersized!

Annoyingly, the other girls all looked amazing and were given beautiful dresses, absolutely stunning dresses that are clearly the reason girls get so giddy over their big day and their once-in-a-lifetime dress. Diane Lynn is a store that gives a really personable service, and Lynn is 100% a professional and an expert in her field. However, today taught me that if I were to ever get married to my darling Mr Man, I'd probably pop to Monsoon or Coast.

I found the dress I wore today was completely OTT and because of my figure, it looked ridiculous. I can now completely understand why those pathetic women on Don't Tell The Bride get so upset when their future husbands choose dresses that isn't to their taste; being in a dress that you don't like is worse than being married in your vintage Levis. I wasn't even getting married and I felt a bit blue about my dress! Shallow, maybe. Pathetic, yes. But also completely understandable and I will not judge any bridezilla again.

Looking around at the stalls was fun, and having been a bridesmaid five times (sixth time will be this summer!), I completely get caught up in the planning and organsing and styling of a wedding. And I know that the dress I wore today is the perfect dress for some lucky bride-to-be out there, and that every bride can find her perfect dress. The other girls were proof of that! However, today taught me something very important: love is love and I don't want to be distracted from that by a meringue or even by a beautiful dress. If I do ever receive a proposal from Mr Man (who is my soulmate, married or not) I know that I will see it as a marriage, not as a wedding - already we have had ten great years together and all that matters is that we have ten more, and another ten after that, and another ten after that.

Beauty Busters: Nailgirls London #11

I was recently sent a sample of polish from Nailgirls London, and as a die-hard OPI/Nails Inc/Leighton Denny fan, I found myself making judgements before I'd even had a proper look at the colour, which turned out to be a sassy aubergine (number 11). On New Year's Eve I decided to give it a bash; I fancied a dark, glamorous colour without going for the predictable black or rouge noir. So, I applied my base coat (I see this as the nail equivalent of taking your make-up off before bed) and opened my brand new bottle of Nailgirls. Immediately, I noticed a huge difference: the brush is a lot longer and a lot slimmer than the brushes I'm used to and this made the application a lot more precise and easy to get right to the edge of each nail (Mr Man regularly laughs at me for leaving millimetre strips of bare nail). Not only was the application easy because of the streamlined, lengthened brush, but the polish was a really nice consistency. This might have been because it was brand new, but I don't remember any nail polish that has seemed quite so perfect in terms of the thickness of the polish: it's thick enough to feel good quality, but thin enough not to gloop. Once applied, I finished with Leighton Denny Crystal Finish top coat (as always) and waited patiently for it to dry.

The end result was perfect: a fun colour (but also neutral enough not to clash with anything too badly) which was simple and so easy to apply, and which lasted for three days before showing signs of chipping. (NB: Leighton Denny Crystal Finish is AMAZING - it's so good that I even apply it immediately after a professional manicure/pedicure - so might have had something to do with the long lasting factor).

Nailgirls London is defiintely one of my new favourites and with new colours every season, there's always going to be an excuse to keep trying this young brand's brilliant products. I suggest you give Nailgirls a go too!

Wardrobe Staple: The White Shirt

The white shirt is one of the most important wardrobe staples, whether you are male or female, corporate or creative, young or of a mature age. However, for such an easy going, I'll-go-with-anything piece of clothing, I always struggle to find the perfect white shirt thanks to my amply sized boobs. The delightful Nathan recently sent me this plain white shirt from The Shirt Company to try, and I have to say, the quality is top notch. I did find the shirt a little baggy around my waist, but this was easy to forgive by the fact there were no gaping holes between buttons over the chest area. What I love most is the attention to detail; the button strip has an elegant ribbon along it, while the shirt came packaged in tissue paper and a sleek white bag with satin ribbon imprinted with The Shirt Company in block lettering. The epitome of chic, which is exactly what the white shirt is all about.

Perfect Winter Day

On Sunday, Mr Man and I went for a nice walk around St Andrews and Newport after visiting his grandparents. It was such a beautiful day: frosty and freezing cold, but bright and sunny and beautiful skies as the sun dipped below the horizon. The perfect winter's day. Mr Man bought me a white, faux fur hat by Barts (it is so glamorous, but for once, glamorous as well as comfortable - it's so soft!) and I wore the jersey he got me for Christmas. Being a dog person, I love it. I also wore my new coat by Monsoon Fusion (£55 in the January sale) and my unglam, yet totally comfy UGGs. What's your idea of the perfect winter outfit for a perfect winter's day?

Layer Up

It's freezing. This morning, it was -5 when I scraped the thick, frosty layer of ice from my car windows before settling into my pre-heated seat. Lucky for me, I have my new Damart thermals!

Before you laugh at Granny Daydreamer with her thermals on, let me tell you a bit about them. They're a dusty shade of lilac and the top has pretty lace detailing around the neckline. They are a snug fit so there isn't any added bulk (I bulked up enough over Christmas!) and they look like a cosy pyjama top and leggings. Just the ticket for this sudden cold snap, either in the safety of your own home or beneath a chunky knit. Just the ticket if you were to go ski-ing anytime soon, too.

Damart do a really good range of pretty thermals that won't ruin your rep or break the bank; figure hugging leggings and feminine vests in autumnal colours start from £15 and are great layered under a little black dress or sheer blouse, or simply to sleep in.

I don't know if it's my age, but sometimes, simple practicalities such as keeping cosy need to be considered: shivering while strutting along in the latest trends isn't a great look...

Beauty Busters: Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm

As you know, I'm not a big fan of lipstick or coloured lip balms but just because of my own insecurities, not because I don't like them. So, I asked the lovely Jen to test Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Pink Blossom because a) she's gorgeous and b) she has lips to rival Angelina's.

Jen said that the lip balm is really nice and felt soft on her lips, that it was really moisturising. The packaging adds a few points because it's very different to regular lip balm. The colour difference was instant but looked natural and had a sheen but wasn't shiny.

The lip balm itself comes in a standard plastic tube, but it comes encased in a cardboard pink tube which slots inside an outer tube with all the product details. It's a bit more special than every day lip balms so is a real treat for yourself. Equally, it would make a nice gift.

The lip balm is £5.99 (but think how much you'd spend on a lipstick, which wouldn't moisturise as well as a lip balm) and comes in six great colours, including Hibiscus (a rusty red), Tiger Lily (a soft caramel) and Red Dahlia (think crushed berries).

I saw the Warehouse SS12 lookbook recently and was instantly impressed: the neutral colour palette of beige, cream, and dove grey is chic and luxurious, while the feminine detailing (think lace, peplums, mid lengths) are right up my sartorial street. Another fashion-forward hit for one of my favourite high street stores.

Happy New Year!

Well, it's New Year's Eve and 2011 will come to an end tonight. It's been a fast, eventful year and one that has brought lots of happiness.

My two beautiful friends Candice and Nicki gave birth to two even more beautiful daughters, Carmen (who I am Godmother to) and Freya. It's hard to express how much love I feel for them - these girls are the sisters I never had so I love them, and therefore love their families and beautiful babies as much. They are very special to me.

My other very special "sister" finally got her a maaaan! Clarabell, if you are up the aisle before me, we're going to have problems! I don't mean it, you know that, and I hope that you and Mr B are happy together always. Shotgun Chief Bridesmaid.

2011 also brought me a paid, freelance writing gig for an international fashion magazine - long awaited! Here's to 2012 when it's published. Fingers crossed I haven't jinxed it. I also found myself with a new 9-5. You might call it a promotion, so here's to success!

2011 also brought me some new friends: Karen, Claire and Stephanie, as well as Tweeps Molly, Mark, Sam, Jayne, Shelly, and many, many more who are all lovely, lovely people.

I think that 2011 has been a good year for me, and I hope it has been for you too. I have recognised what I want in life but also what is important: LOVE. May 2012 bring more love, happiness and good health, to one and all. Happy New Year.

The Antidote to Carb Face

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and have been enjoying lots of parties and fancy foods over the holiday season. I know I have been over-indulging, in food and Champagne and all sorts. My usual regime of exercise and healthy eating has been pushed aside by laziness and gluttony. I officially have Carb Face.

The only thing keeping me going through this chronic overdosing of all things edible is the thought of spring time. H&M's spring/summer catalogue came through my door this morning, with a vibrant Liya Kebede clad in coral, and later I came across the Primark SS12 ad campaign. The bright colours are a symbol of promise, of a lightly tanned face, toned legs and basically feeling and looking healthy. Come January 4th (back to work day) I will be on a detox of ginger tea and lemon with only protein to eat before forcing myself back into my "everything in moderation" lifestyle in preparation for spring.

Until then, I'll continue to eat carbs while perusing SS12 images as a way to remind myself that soon it will all be over. Kind of sad, kind of exciting.

Local Treasures: Tiger Lily Boutique

Broughty Ferry has really perked up over the last few months and one of my favourite new clothing boutiques is Tiger Lily Boutique on Brook Street. For a while now, I've been thinking that Broughty Ferry needs a young, trend focused shop (but something unique, not mass produced high street), so I was excited to see that Tiger Lily had opened their doors a few weeks ago. Almost immediately, I popped in to see founder, Debbie McArthur. Debbie, a lovable, friendly and very chatty character, was previously a visual merchandiser for Mango (she travelled all over the UK to assist Mango stores with their in-store styling and window displays) and found that opening her own boutique was a natural progression having had so much experience on the great British high street.

Tiger Lily boutique is a small but totally lovely boutique in the heart of Broughty Ferry and the interior is simple but with pretty, feminine accents such as floral print wall paper and a plush white, high backed sofa near the window. Debbie herself says Tiger Lily Boutique has a girly, shabby-chic vibe and is French inspired; many of her customers comment on how they would love Tiger Lily to be their bedroom and I can see why it would be every girl's dream walk-in wardrobe!

Tiger Lily's stock reflects the boutique's personality. Very feminine pieces which include sheer blouses, printed tea dresses and faux furs with some really pretty necklaces and the odd preppy satchel. Cute label, Sugarhill Boutique, is also stocked at Tiger Lily and is regularly seen on the ultra feminine cast of The Only Way Is Essex - very glam!

For Tiger Lily to open it's doors, Debbie has received support from Business Gateway and Enterprise Zone (Dundee City Council), and says that this along with the support of her family and boyfriend, has been instrumental in establishing her boutique. She loves running Tiger Lily and I can only wish her every success for 2012 - if Debbie continues choosing such fun, flirty and feminine stock I think Tiger Lily Boutique will stay firmly on the Ferry shopping map.

The Masquerade Ball

Last week, Mr Man and I attended a masquerade ball at The Old Course Hotel in St Andrews. We went with our friends, Karen and Jan, and had such a fantastic evening. It was so festive, and all the party go-ers had made such an effort to get dressed up and find their perfect mask. (There were one or two slightly eccentric outfits, but I'll not go there).

The mask was obviously the pièce de résistance, so Karen and I had planned in detail what we would wear around our chosen masks. Karen's mask was an ornamental bronze mask with swan-like detail, which she found at Mask Boutique and my black metal filigree mask with diamante detail was by Just Posh Masks. They were both absolutely gorgeous and tied with pretty ribbons (no hair dents) - we each have them hanging on our dressing tables as a souvenir.

Originally, I had planned to wear this amazing Harriet dress by Dina Bar-El, which I found on Girl Meets Dress (an amazing site that rents designer dresses for a fraction of the RRP - I also blogged for them on LFW last season) but sadly, it was slightly too big for me. With just 24 hours until the ball, I had only Saturday morning to find myself a dress! Thank the shopping heavens for the Next store in the Overgate - I found a simple black maxi dress with cowl back, and it was just perfect. (It'll also be great with gladiator sandals and boho hair come summer). I wore my high street dress with Jimmy Choos and an Accessorize clutch which was a gift from my best friends. Karen looked amazing in William Tempest, while the boys were ever so handsome in their kilts.

The evening itself was a blast. A delicious three course meal (salmon, beef, chocolate mousse cheesecake thingy) and all evening the wine flowed freely. I stress freely. After that was a spot of dancing (Beyonce and Shakira, Maroon 5, basic cheesy pop with a few Christmas numbers thrown in) including a bit of a ceilidh which was great fun.

Local Treasures: Lovely Things

Lovely Things is a very new shop located on Dock Street in Dundee. Proprietor, Lynne, has transformed what was originally The Dog Food Store into Lovely Things, a boutique that sells, well, lovely things!

Lynne herself is a really friendly, chatty character and is obviously passionate about interiors and design, as well as mixing vintage pieces with contemporary pieces. Whenever I see her I'm always taken by how gorgeous she is and her relaxed, slightly edgy/slightly cosy style is definitely reflected in her quirky, oh-so-chic shop.

What I first noticed about Lovely Things was the amazing wall paper - slate grey, very modern but with a traditional feel. The dark wooden flooring and print of a world map on the back wall continue the juxtaposition of old versus new, while her stock does the same: a minimalist, contemporary grey, suede sofa in minimalist sits in front of a huge, ornately framed mirror; a traditional gold heart decoration is as equally gorgeous as the funky red and white wooden heart decorations, but completely different in style. What's more is, you can spend hours in Lovely Things and I guarantee you won't come away empty handed, whether it's a gift for a friend or a treat for yourself. The proof is in the pudding - after I had gone to see Lynne for this blog post, my Mum popped in the following day and spent a small fortune!

TDD: What is the ethos of Lovely Things - does it have a certain style or personality?

LD: I think the ethos is “a bit of a mix”. I like to show that there is a place for modern with vintage – mix it up a bit and see what happens – but more than that: just have fun with interiors. If you like it – then it works.

TDD: How do you choose stock for Lovely Things?
LD: Choosing stock is one of the best things about this job for me: I surf the internet for hours and although trade shows are hectic, they are a great source and I still love shopping! I picked up a lot of ideas from the many shops I used to go to when I lived in Buckinghamshire and I’ve brought those ideas back here. I hope people like them too.

TDD: What are the future plans for Lovely Things?
LD: I think it’s early days but I guess I really just want to keep surprising people with the new stock – everyone so far has said such great things about the place that I really want them to always be thinking that and be on top of my game. Sourcing is key – being innovative and creative. And if you’re asking about ambition I’d love another shop!

TDD: Describe your own style.
LD: Vintage Modern Eclectic Emotional Fun

TDD: Do you have a favourite designer?
LD: No is the simple answer. I have lots of designers I admire but not one I like all of the time. I’m a changeable fish! But I do love Osbourne & Little wallpaper and I’m a sucker for a nice chest of drawers covered in Farrow and Ball paint. Kartell gets the thumbs up too in our house – their Ghost chairs are really easy to wipe down after a messy toddler tea!

TDD: And a style icon?
LD: Probably Kirstie Allsop. Don’t laugh! Her Devonshire house is amazing – I love all her handmade touches (not that I have the time to do that myself….) and I do love the way she dresses even though I couldn’t carry that off. I’m probably a cross between Chrissie Hynd and Sarah Beeney the way I dress!

TDD: Any fashion/style tips or secrets?
LD: I am absolutely all about the mixing the old with the new no matter what age or style your house is…just experiment. I have a gorgeous little box my Gran bought me with “Tidy Hair Nets” engraved on one side and two drawers on the other – it has travelled the world with me and looked great in every single home I’ve lived in. When you’ve worked with, or are in, the military and have moved as much as they or I have done – you learn to go with what you’ve got. That and candles. Gotta have candles!

On Saturday night, I danced the night away at the masquerade ball at the Old Course Hotel in St Andrews (separate post to come later). On Sunday, I went to pick up my car and took the opportunity to a bit of last minute Christmas shopping (yes, I am all organised this year!) before visiting Mr Man's Granny, who spoiled me with a gorgeous pashmina and yummy caramel shortbread.

I got something for Mr Man, something for Mum and something for me. You see, a few weeks ago, I had visited a new boutique in St Andrews, Jewel, in which I found a gorgeous heart shaped ring. I didn't buy it, thinking I had enough jewellery (can this be true of any woman?!) and the ring has been on my mind ever since. I popped by Jewel yesterday and decided that if the ring was still there, it was fate. Guess what? The ring and I were meant to be - I bought it yesterday with no hesitation! A Christmas gift to me, from me. Every time I look at the delicate silver heart, I will remember to always love myself, because this is the only way that others can love you too.

Local Treasures: Mohair

Sorry I've not posted in a few days, I've been a bit under the weather (sympathy most welcome) but having felt better today, I thought I'd do something a bit special. On the run up to Christmas I'm going to feature a select few boutiques in Dundee that have caught my attention lately.

I'm always on the lookout for individual pieces to add to my basic wardrobe and give each look a personal touch that has a story, or says something about me. My favourites include the slouchy red leather bag that Mr Man bought me in Australia, the cracked, vintage opal ring that was my great aunt's and the wooden elephant given to us by my Sri Lankan uncle that sits in our living room. Most recently, I have my eye on a vintage 20s style clutch bag that I saw at my Mum's the other week...

So, I'll be featuring these special, unique boutiques that each sell individual, limited pieces that will mean shopping for gifts, clothes and interiors will be that little bit more special. I think it's so important to support our local independent retailers who work hard to source special pieces for us. I think we need to encourage more investment shopping rather than mass purchases, and really spend our money wisely. The other advantage of shopping at independent boutiques is that you really do receive a first class service. You are the customer, what you need is what is most important. You won't have to be a nuisance to teenage girls who think gossiping over a heap of slogan g-strings about the boys in One DIrection is more imporant than your shopping needs. You pay for a more personal service, which actually, is priceless. Anyway. First up, we have Mohair.

Mohair is a warm and welcoming boutique on the corner of King Street and Fort Street. It's far enough away from the main streets to allow a nice stroll (say, from Visocchi's or Toast for coffee before going to The Ship for a quick half) but not so far that you won't want to go.

The shop itself is spacious without being intimidating; the stock is displayed neatly and cleanly, without over crowding. There are beautiful touches in the decor such as the full length, heavy looking mirror in the centre of the shop floor and the vintage suitcases in the window. When I arrived to meet Mhairi, the founder of Mohair, she was instantly friendly and smiley, talking avidly about the labels she stocks and her plans to include more interiors in the future. She and her family are originally from the West Coast, but love the East Coast so much that Mhairi ditched her banking job to open Mohair and relocate in an attempt to live her retail dream. (Thank heavens, because Mohair - the name of which is a play on Mhairi's own name - is a great addition to Broughty Ferry, which is really bustling with activity again). Dressed casually in slate grey, Mhairi was understated but superbly stylish and really is a great representative of the Mohair style.

Mohair stocks a little bit of everything: clothing by Cocoa Cashmere, Fee G and Nancy Mac (among others), cosy woollens, cute soaps, luxe-boho jewellery as well as fragrance and candles by uber-chic Miller Harris. (If you haven't heard of Miller Harris, think Jo Malone).

I fell in love with some stunning pieces in the Mohair AW collection that instantly made me think of Stella McCartney's sheer polka dots, while other pieces (a quilted, almost metallic coat) oozed the sophistication of Chanel. There are also fantastic bags and purses which are made from eel skin. They are so unique and yet so utterly on trend that they would make gorgeous Christmas gifts - whether for yummy mummies, trendy sisters or even glamorous grannies! There is a necklace that I'm dying to go back for (my vow of non-shopping won't last long) and a bracelet that is perfect for my boyfriend's sister. Hopefully she'll read this, so I won't say if I'll buy it or not...

What I love most about Mohair is that there really is something for everyone. Any age, any style, any background, from tourists on a budget to local celebrities (Lorraine Kelly is a huge fan). The prices range from £5 to £500, so everyone can treat either themselves or someone else to a taste of Mohair this Christmas. What's better than opening a special, non-generic gift at Christmas time?

TDD: What is the ethos of Mohair - does it have a certain style or personality?

Mohair: It's probably all about good quality, luxury items that stand the test of time. We also like designers that support their producers in a positive way, and we are interested in supporting designers in and around Dundee - we want people to remember what's available right on their door step.

TDD: How do you choose stock for Mohair?

Mohair: By constantly reviewing what's new in fashion and follow Vogue, Tatler, Harper's Baazar, etc. We visit the shows in London twice a year and hope to go further a field - the States are beckoning! Mohair stock will constantly evolve as our tastes change and as new designers appear. We hope our customers continue to enjoy the pieces we bring them.

TDD: What are the future plans for Mohair? You love the store, Anthropology.... perhaps there will be another Mohair in the future?

Mohair: Definitely, we'd love to build a mini empire but want to perfect our shop in the Ferry firstly. We're in the process of building our web site too and hope to offer on-line shopping from that sometime next year.

TDD: Describe your own style.

Mohair: Classic, individual; I love understated glamour but also like a touch of bling.

TDD: Do you have a favourite designer?

Mohair: There are loads of designers out there but Stella McCartney is a favourite and I like Alice Temperley at the moment too.

TDD: And a style icon?

Mohair: No one person in particular as I love too many different looks. My favourite decades would probably include the 50s, I love flat pumps with skinny bottoms. Also, I love the 70s, so wide leg trousers, chiffon / silky loose blouses, heels, hats - oh and big shades and big bags!

TDD: Any fashion/style tips or secrets?

Mohair: You really can wear anything if you wear it confidently!

Harvey Nichols Edinburgh x Stylist Skincare Awards

You guys already know how much I adore Harvey Nichols Edinburgh, right? Jimmy Choo opened their first boutique in St Moritz (their second Swiss store - the other is in Zurich) on Friday and what's more is, the St Moritz boutique features an exclusive collection unique to the store - it's a winter wonderland, in a winter wonderland!

Beauty Busters: Aveda Smoothing Lip Colour

I'm not a lipstick girl (give me a smoky eye any day), but this is mostly due to being self conscious about my teeth. That said, I am slightly obsessed with the deep plums and glossy aubergine lippies seen on the runways of Manish Arora, Felder Felder and Holly Fulton this season. I am mesmerised by anything with a gothic, romantic feel; black lace, dark lips, glossy hair, leather leggings, studded shoes.... and Aveda's Smoothing Lip Colour in Tanzanite.

So, I gave it a bash. I'm undecided about the packaging for Aveda; the box is paper and in the famous Aveda sage greens and feels really organic and environmentally friendly (recycle-able), while the lipstick itself comes in a silver tube (also nice - very clean looking) but the cap is a plastic horrible looking thing that seems too big for the silver case. If the cap matched the silver casing, Aveda lippies would look much, much more chic in your Mulberry Effie tote.

Applying the lipstick was easy - really soft and smooth and very moisturising, but I guess you would expect nothing less from the top skin care brand. If I do happen to wear lipstick, I always put lipbalm on first, but this time I didn't and it really didn't need it. I would recommend using a nude lipliner, as the colour did bleed a little - I imagine this is because it is so full of moisture.

The colour is AMAZING. The pictures of Tanzanite on my lips have more of a red tone, whereas the product shot has a more purple hue: it's generally quite purple and very dark. I love this lipstick so much (and so do all the girls in the office) but I just don't have the confidence to wear it because of my teeth - I feel it draws attention to what I would rather hide! I also would recommend going a teeny, tiny bit over your natural lip line (as recommended by MAC make up artist, Lynsey, when I met her in May this year - apparently everyone does it) as darker colours tend to make your lips look a bit thinner than they are. Be careful though, there's a fine line between the illusion of a plump pout and the reality of a "OMG, have you seen her awful lipstick?!".

Lipstick Ladies, you should definitely buy Aveda's Smoothing Lip Colour, in Tanzanite or any other colour of your choice. The product is brilliant, and the Tanzanite is saucy, sexy but oh-so-sophisticated. It's also very now. Top marks for Aveda.

Made By Niki

Need some seductive, saucy underwear but don't want to look cheap? Made By Niki is a British lingerie and bodywear brand that has revolutionised bodyshaping underwear and naughty lingerie - so much so, that they won Shapewear Brand of the Year at the UK Lingerie Awards earlier this year. Naomi Campbell was recently shot wearing Made By Niki for French style magazine, Soon. Some pieces of the collection have a definite vintage vibe (for these, browse the Classic and Feel collections), others are very modern like these designs from the String collection. The Knockout collection is distinctly sporty, great for tweenagers who want something special, while Rare is definitely for racy, grown up girls. Made By Niki has something for every woman - unless you're above an E cup.

Musicology

Violetta Palak is a Polish artist based in Dundee. She graduated from the Cracow School of Art and Fashion Design and has exhibited her work in Poland, Portugal and England. Tomorrow, she launches her Scottish debut at Freedom Hair salon. From 7 pm, you can view her Musicology collection, the inspiration for which developed from Jazz, Funk and Bossa Nova. The juxtaposition of her bright versus neutral colour palette is intriguing and makes me curious to know the story behind the painting. Violetta's style is dynamic; her use of acrylics and confident brush strokes give an intensity to the paintings which is bound to draw her audience into each and every piece.

Pop down to Freedom Hair tomorrow night to celebrate the launch of the exhibit with the artist herself. Wine and nibbles will be available, along with discounts for savvy Thursday night shoppers. Sounds like a perfect evening to me.

H&M x Marni

I loved the H&M x Lanvin collaboration. I thought it was the best collection that had been developed in line with the designer collaborations for H&M (Stella, Jimmy Choo, Lagerfeld, Viktor & Rolf, to name a few). I thought that H&M had really found something special - finding designers and making their work accessible to those who don't have high fashion budgets Then I saw H&M x Versace and was disappointed. I was sad to think that Lanvin was the H&M peak and that Versace was one step back towards the high street.

As if to remind me of what they have achieved, H&M announce the next collaboration - MARNI! I am very excited and intrigued to see what the Italian fashion house will produce. Quirky prints, no doubt!

Marni is an innovative and enthusiastic label, the clothes and accessories don't conform to classic styles or attempt futuristic fashions. Marni is just Marni: individual and full of character.

Founder and Creative Director Consuelo Castiglioni has designed a collection for both women and men and these will be available to buy (in stores and online) from 8th March 2012. Castiglioni says, “I wanted to create a true Marni wardrobe by revisiting all our favourite pieces in signature fabrics and prints. As always, I love juxtaposing prints and colours, mixing modern tribal with Bauhaus graphic adding sporty utilitarian elements”.

The collection features signature Marni accents, from tribal prints on an elegantly cut dress right through to fun jewellery and scarves. For women, the colours are vivid and the prints are bold, while the silhouettes are all Marni staples, with full pleated skirts, dresses, cropped trousers and jacquard knits in silk and cotton poplin. Perfect for summer. Easy Oze and totally fabulous clothes that are sophisticated and super stylish.

For men, the colours and fabrics are softened for a modern, relaxed take on menswear staples. The use of print is subtle - think jacket linings or contrast piping on a great shirt. Simplicity.

Versace might have resonated with the masses, but Marni will have the fashion pack planning their favourite pieces, weeks in advance. This is a collaboration which fashionistas will have strategies in place for a quick, smooth purchase without any hiccups. I suggest you get ready now - this is another H&M collaboration that is sure to fly off the shelves.

MAC AW11

Earlier this year I met the delightful Anais and Lynsey from the MAC Cosmetics team. They spoiled me rotten at Tiger Lily in Edinburgh while updating me on all things MAC for this season. The products are actually amazing with a lot of thought, time and effort going into the production and delivery of the products. For instance, the Mineralize collection features real particles of gem stones. MAC is also running a campaign for the public, MAC Me Over which is really great fun and as always, MAC are totally open to all types of beauty.

Anais works tirelessly in the MAC press office and was kind enough to give me a book on all the major shows that MAC worked on for AW11 (Lynsey is a MAC artist who regularly works on tops shows such as McQueen) which I have photographed below, along with samples of the AW11 products. The lipsticks are a particular favourite of mine, in juicy looking colours. Of course, there is a classic red too, which fits in perfectly with this season's 40s trend.

Bergdorf Goodman's TV ad for Christmastime is just my cup of tea. From the excitment of the Berdorf doorway to the scattering sound of the doggy claws, from the furry purple clutch to the bulldog and cigars, from the Lanvin mannequins to the music, there's nothing I don't like about this feel-good holiday video. What I love most is the message. It's worth watching until the end.

Beauty Busters: Lush Lovely Jubblies

Following a request on the Lush forum, the eco-friendly cosmetics company decided to develop a breast firming cream because their customers were using the neck cream on their boobs too. Lovely Jubblies was developed, using firming ingredients such as tiger lilies and meadowsweet herb (as recommended by a medicinal herbalist) along with cocoa butter, oils from almond, jojoba, avacado and evening primrose, as well as beeswax to ensure maximum moisturisation! The cream also contains orange blossom honey, fresh rose, jasmine, lemongrass oil and ylang ylang to create a pleasant but strong scent that (once settled) doesn't interfere with your chosen fragrance or body moisturiser.

I've been using the cream regularly for around two months now and it definitely makes a difference to the breast tissue; it tightens, lifts and moisturises. I tend to shower, moisturise, then massage Lovely Jubblies into my lovely jubblies and then wait a few seconds for it to absorb before putting my bra on. I don't even need to worry about which bra, because Lovely Jubblies has never left a stain or grubby mark on my underwear. I feel buoyant throughout the day (!) and when my boobs are removed from the safety of my Freya bra, they are at their most perky (not always the case without my Lovely Jubblies!) and feel firm.

This cream is really some kinda wonderful. I do believe it works because my boobs are the ultimate test because they're ample! Lovely Jubblies does actually make a difference. Since receiving my sample, I've bought my own tub of Lovely Jubblies and it will most definitely remain a staple in my ever increasing beauty regime. Thanks Lush!

Italy's Finest

How gorgeous do these perfume bottles look? They are all new fragrances from the brilliant Italian fashion houses, Prada, Fendi and Valentino.

Each of the new fragrances (available at The Perfume Shop) really oozes the respective label's aesthetic: it's as if each brand has decided to push their ethos via their latest fragrance in an attempt to reach everyone. The beauty market is affordable to everyone and personally I think that the new fragrances from Prada, Fendi and Valentino are a marketing strategy to let everyone know what they are all about, and encourage them to delve further into their respective shopping worlds. What's wrong with that when everyone is all about the investment shopping? It might sound like a bit of a conspiracy theory, but it isn't really relevant - the bottles are all so gorgeous, I was sold immediately!

Fan di Fendi comes in a beautiful, sleek rectangular bottle with the gold double F logo and fits nicely with the modern, experimental vibe that Karl Lagerfeld has created for Fendi, while Prada Candy is fun; a tall bottle with hot pink, gold and black perspex panelling and again, represents the Prada label really well - vibrant, relaxed, almost nonchalant.

My favourite though, has to be the Valentina by Valentino (I adore the TV campaign with Freja which reminds me of a scene from Baz Luhrmann's Romeo & Juliet - must watch that movie again ASAP) because the tiny ceramic-like, sugar, pastel flowers on the rounded bottle are so pretty. Valentino is a classic label with a clear style - luxurious fabrics such as organza and silk, but simple designs with feminine details that often include oversize bows and soft ruffles - and this is exactly what I get from the Valentina bottle.

The scents themselves (the important part!) are very pleasant. Three quite difference fragrances, but all pleasant in their own ways. Again, Valentina by Valentino is the winner (light, floral) but they would all make beautiful gifts for that someone special, whether in her Fendi baguette or sitting pretty on her dressing table

Beauty Busters: Fake Bake Original Lotion and Mousse

I am such a sucker for a bit of fake tan. I mostly use Fake Bake products because they have a very natural colour (more brown, less orange) and although it doesn't smell great, Fake Bake products come with gloves and a colour-guide staining agent so you can see where you need to blend, e.g. pesky elbows/knees/ankles. In summer, I'll use the Fake Bake Original Lotion for a deep tan, which works brilliantly on already sun-kissed skin. However, on unexpectedly hot days - which are few and far between in Scotland - I use a different brand's instant tan to complement a beige linen shirt dress with tan wedges and gold accessories (safari style is always in a winner in summer). I also bronze, bronze, bronze with Nars Laguna.

However, when the winter months arrive, I still like to have a bit of colour because quite frankly, my skin goes a ghastly shade of death which is never a good look (well, maybe on Edward Cullen, but that's an exception to the rule). So, when the days become shorter I turn to my Fake Bake Mousse, which is a much lighter consistency than the Lotion and gives a really nice tint to the skin. It really just takes away the translucency of my skin and gives a bit of life to pale limbs. I am over the Versace x H&M collaboration before it has even started. Just as fashionistas everywhere are sharpening their elbows in preparation for the launch of the high street store's latest designer collaboration, I am more concerned another H&M collaboration being launched next week: H&M, curated by Sophia Neophitou-Apostolou, Editor in Chief of 10 magazine.

The womenswear capsule collection launches on 24 November and consists of minimal but modern silhouettes, finished in a neutral colour palette of black, white and cream with accents of snakeskin and brown. The fabrics are pure luxury (wool, leather, silk) and are perfect wardrobe staples for any busy fashionista heading straight from the office to dinner. The collection will only be available at Selfridges in London, but if you can get there then do - the white coat with gold belt is a great piece, as is the black leather skirt.

Neophitou says of her collaboration with H&M: “The pieces that I have selected for H&M Selfridges focus on staples that have strong architectural shapes and really simple clothes to build a wardrobe that doesn’t wear you. My favourite pieces are the cream wool coat with gold belt detail and the great pair of heels with snakeskin detailing.”

I've been a fan of Sophia Neophitou's style since I can remember, mostly because I admire her stylish execution of wearing simple clothes cut to suit her figure, without losing her own identity - she's fabulously sexy without being OTT. What I really like is that she's at ease with her natural curls and her hourglass figure - both aspects of my body that I have yet to fully come to terms with. Maybe I am secretly hoping that by wearing her designs, the Neophitou confidence will rub off on me.

When Dreams Become Reality

For a long time, I've wished that Dundee would be hit by something really special. There is a lot of creativity in Dundee but I don't think the city celebrates it enough - a lot of people (myself included) are not aware of everything that Dundee has to offer and despite this being recognised internationally, I'm not sure that the city itself embraces the creative outlets it provides. I'm not sure about you, but I tend to think that to be creative in Scotland, one has to be in Glasgow or Edinburgh. (Or just relocate to London, but then, why should we?).

So, for a long time I have wished that something with creative clout would come to Dundee to act as a motherboard for all things creative, to pull everything together in one giant fashionable hub and give creative people a sense of being. To begin with I thought that perhaps DC Thomson could franchise a Scottish Vogue, but so far, no Vogue. (Dear Mr Thomson, feel free to investigate. I will happily come on board).

I must admit, I've had a few daydreams of this sort. Only recently though, have those daydreams started to come true via the V&A Dundee project.

Last night, I attended a presentation at the University of Abertay, given by the Director of the V&A Dundee project, Philip Long. The event was sponsored by Freedom Hair and DDOne. It was great meeting people from the retail and business industry within Dundee (representatives from Overgate, Walkers, etc) while "oohing" and "ahing" over Kengo Kuma's architectural model. (Which is now at full size as opposed to the half size model at the voting polls last year). The presentation really brought the project alive; Philip Long is obviously passionate about the project, but he also appears to be very passionate, and excited, about Dundee and the potential the city has. He compared it to the recent opening of the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, Spain and explained the similarities between the two cities; both waterfront cities that have lost industrial trades and which are well placed between larger cities (Glasgow and Edinburgh for Dundee, Madrid and Barcelona for Bilbao). Long also talked about the possibilities of exhibits he would like to see at the V&A Dundee and seemed particularly keen to retain the immense talent coming out of Scotland in a fashion and design sense, mentioning great Scottish design successes such as Jonathan Saunders, Christopher Kane, Louise Gray and Hayley Scanlan.

A Fundraising Committee has been established which has already submitted major funding applications for the project. When asked how confident he was about the project being a success (e.g. going ahead!), Long answered with a definite "very confident". This should be reassuring to cynics that argue that Dundee has already missed some tremendous opportunities and are skeptical about this being another non-starter. However, having listened to Philip Long talk about the project, I think that 2015 will see the opening of the V&A Dundee. Daydreamers, it's time to get excited.

More and more, I find myself hunting down affordable clothes that are also really great quality. It can be really difficult to find good value for money (a £20 dress that falls apart after two washes is not value for money) when shopping on the cheap, but every so often I come across a hidden treasure in a mountain of discarded acrylic.

For instance, I once found a prom dress in Primark that would rival any of the ones in Debenhams but it cost just £18. I bought both colours, natch. That was three years ago and they're good as new. Another time, it was a pair of ankle boots in New Look that were sturdy, comfortable and were a reasonable £24.99. Just this weekend, I found a gorgeous coat (a la K-Mid) in M&Co. on offer from £75 to £55, a funnel neck in wintery, off-white which makes it current but classic.

More recently, I discovered Apricot, a fashion website which sells good clothes at good prices. The dresses particularly caught my eye, with prices ranging from £20 - £30 for any style you could ask for: black skater dresses for the office, sequin shifts for the party season, geometric prints to fuel this season's obsession with the 60s. Not enough for you? Well, there are also woolly knits for the colder months and sheer, lacy dresses for a fun night on the town. I can promise you that you'll love at least one design. Me? I fell in love with this floral dress, perfect for Sunday lunch.

Beauty Busters: Wahl Spirolls Conical Heated Rollers

I was kindly sent a set of the Wahl Spirolls heated rollers to try out after expressing my difficult experiences with rollers of any sort. I love the idea of popping my rollers in and leaving them to set before shaking out the curls, leaving me with a bouncy barnett big enough to rival Sofia Loren's! In reality, though, I can't even get the blooming things in, and if I do manage to get a couple in, I'd have been quicker using my tongs.

So, the gorgeous Stella challenged me to road test the Wahl Spirolls. They arrived today and I was so excited to try them out. I washed and blow-dried my hair smooth and turned the rollers on. (Don't worry, I read the instructions and there's even a How-To DVD included). Spirolls come on a heated base; 12 large rollers and 6 medium. They heat up, but the ends stay cool so that you can wind the hair round before popping the flock (that's the plastic grip) over the roller to keep the hair securely in place. Also, the rollers are cone shaped, which gives a more modern look, kind of like the Yogi Hair Wand does. Also, the definition and size of curl depends on how much hair you use for each roller as well as how tightly you roll them. (e.g. thicker amounts of hair gives looser curls; tighter rolls means tighter curls).

My first attempt at getting the Spirolls in was poor, and I immediately thought, "Surprise, surprise, another set of rollers that I can't work." But, I persevered and after a couple of tries I managed to get them all in - once I got a technique, I was good to go. My hair is fine (but there's lots of it) and it just reaches below my shoulders, so I used all of the large rollers and 2 medium rollers. I left them to set for ten minutes and then unclasped the flocks to reveal ringlets. Not my scene, so I ran my fingers through them and shook the curls out for a fuller, softer look.

The curls did go quite soft fairly quickly but I have naturally curly hair which helped to maintain the curls - even after a twenty minute walk with the dog. I think women with straight hair might struggle to hold the curls without any product, so I would definitely recommend anyone using Spirolls to use plenty of hairspray before setting each roller, and I would advise leaving them in for 15 minutes if you can.

Overall, these are the best rollers (of any type) that I have ever used, and yes, I actually would use them again. The only downside is the weight of the rollers once they are clipped in - but for 10-15 minutes, I can cope. Any woman who desires curls or volume or a bit of oomph should invest in a set of Spirolls. I really like them, and I especially like that they make for an effortlessly polished look, kind of like the old-school Hollywood starlets of yesteryear. It's all very retro and using Spirolls makes doing your own hair feel incredibly glamorous when and fun!

Temporary Measures

When I was young, all my friends had their ears pierced. It was pretty standard that when girls reached the age of twelve or thirteen their Mums would take them to get their ears pierced. My Mum always told me that I could pierce my ears when I turned sixteen (she was always a bit ~~old fashioned~~ traditional, which always seemed to ruin my life at the time but actually did me some good later on in life). Anyway, when I finally reached sweet sixteen, I pierced my ears. Turned out, it wasn't for me; the piercings got all infected (despite religious cleaning, etc) and I had to take the earrings out because, frankly, they were ming.

The piercings closed over and I never pierced my ears (or anything else!) again. However, my friend Nicki always wore huge hoops when she was seventeen and ever since then I've been envious of girls and women who have had their pick of earrings. From Nic's J-Lo-esque hoops, to the pearl studs I gave Candice on her wedding day in 2009, I've always had earring envy. What made this so difficult to deal with was the lack of fashion forward, modern clip-on earrings available to buy.

I've never found a decent pair of affordable clip-on earrings that don't scream, "TACK!". I don't want multicoloured gem drop earrings like Pat Butcher wears, nor do I want oversize, woven brass studs from the 80s - I hate the 80s. What I do want, and always have wanted, are sparkling chandeliers made especially for those nights out on the town when you want to wear your hair tied back without losing the glam factor. For the past decade, I've never found what I've been looking for when it comes to clip-on earrings, but last month I discovered Eternal Collection.

I know - it might not sound like the type of place to have what I've been searching for (I mean, if Mikey, Accessorize and Debenhams can't do it, who can?!) but that's why we were taught not to judge books by their covers. Eternal Collection had the exact earrings I've been searching for: Swarovski crystals, chandelier style, sparkling and shimmering and generally looking amazing. Eternal Collection has a huge collection of clip-on earrings (usually websites/stores stock a thrilling choice of two or three styles which generally tend to be exactly the same) so there's something for everyone, although I defy any woman not to love my chandeliers.

So, I thought I'd share with you how delighted I was to discover Eternal Collection and their clip-on earrings. Even more than that, I was pleased to learn that the company is based in Perthshire, so is a local business which I am proud to support.

Jonathan’s über-chic blog is where his colourful array of Glasgow, London and Paris street style shots are usually displayed, and now his fans can admire his work at the Jim Haynes’ Atelier A-2 in Paris until 1^st January 2012.

Sometimes, we all get completely fed up of life's everyday routine; pressures at work (worse than ever with the current economic climate), difficult financial issues (ditto), relationship problems, family struggles and the exhaustion from trying to keep fit can all play a part in making us feel run down. I recently blogged for The Huffington Post UK on the masculine trend (read it here) and how I don't consider it to be the best trend for me. However, Next are doing some amazing blazers at the moment and as soon as I saw this white jersey tux jacket, I knew I had to do an outfit post on it. It's exactly the type of thing I'd love to wear, but that I think requires a long, slender frame. Well, screw it! I thought I'd give it a bash anyway. I styled it with black skinnies but a pair of wide leg trousers would make for an elegant look. This wonder-blazer will also look amazing with a sequin dress, draped casually over your shoulders.

Beauty Busters: Bobbi Brown Party

Now, you know I'm a die-hard Tom Ford Black Orchid fan and that it is pretty much the only perfume I wear.

BUT.

Last week I was invited to the Estee Lauder Companies press day in Glasgow (Blythswood Hotel Penthouse Suite, nonetheless!) and met some of the lovely girls at Aramis, Ojon, Origins and Clinique, among others. The lovely (and very chic) Dafna at Bobbi Brown kindly gave me a sample of Bobbi Brown's new fragrance, Party, and I love it. There's just one problem: it doesn't suit me.

In the bottle, the fragrance is divine; violet leaves, rose petals and sandalwood means it's very rich, but in a good way. It's a romantic, feminine fragrance that really does last all day. Bobbi Brown's Party is a very pretty scent, warm and floral (probably the rose) but unfortunately, I think that the rose is the problem for me. Quite simply, it doesn't sit nicely on my skin which I am so disappointed about because I was so excited to have found an alternative perfume, which could be worn throughout the day or in the evening. It's a brilliant all-rounder, but it's special too. Party contains sandalwood, which is also found in Black Orchid and I think this is what drew me to Party so strongly. I love the violet scent as well and I am just so disappointed that my skin doesn't work with Bobbi's newest fragrance, because as I said before - I LOVE IT!

I've tried forcing myself to wear it, but it just won't work. The thing is, on someone else it will smell amazing, exactly the way it is supposed to smell. I imagine this is a fragrance Carrie Bradshaw would choose to wear when sipping red wine in front of an open fire, cosied up in a woolly jumper and suede, berry coloured boots while chatting with Miranda. Some lucky girls will have the delightful treat of wearing Party every day and smelling absolutely beautiful, but sadly, that girl is not me.

Whitney Port, the fashion designer better known for her appearances in cult TV shows, The Hills and The City, has teamed up with Very.co.uk to model the new Love Label collection. Port's laid back LA style has been imitated by many, but true style comes with personality; Port is the leggy girl-next-door who will loan you her Prada dress with no hesitations, and would rather go for dinner with her girlfriends than with the plethora of men offering to take her out.

That's why Whitney Port is so adored by girls across the globe - her good looks aren't intimidating (her fingers are nowhere near as slender as those famous legs!) and she's as happy in jeans as she is in couture. She's the girl that models, but then falls down the stairs. In both of the MTV shows she wasn't bitchy or deceitful, she seemed to genuinely be herself - a nice, lovely girl with a great wardrobe.

And now, part of that great wardrobe can be yours - Port is the current model for Very.co.uk's Love Label, and doesn't she look amaaaaaze? Whitney's own style is feminine (that long caramel hair is gorgeous and she's partial to a floral print) but she likes to grunge it up a bit with a fistful of yellow gold and a lot of black. I think she really brings her own cool style to these images - somewhere between a sexy Jessica Rabbit and a sophisticated Katharine Hepburn - which must be hard to do when modelling a specific brand's collection. What I love about Whitney Port is that she doesn't conform to style rules - she has fun with fashion but always knows who she is inside.

A Creative Force

As her time as a MAC Cosmetics Viva Glam spokesperson comes to an end, Lady Gaga recently debuted a film (directed by Ruth Hogben) on VIVAGLAM.com to encourage her little monsters and MAC fans to continue to help to reach the Viva Glam campaign target of $250 million, which Gaga set back in February this year. With only $26 million to go, she enlisted her stylist, Nicola Formichetti (aka the Creative Director at Mugler) to create The Masterpiece as a final bid of encouragement for fundraising. Formichetti took images and self-portraits received from thousands of participants to incorporate into the design (which was unveiled in the video earlier this month) and is part of a marketing tool to promote the cause that supports people affected by HIV and AIDS.

Champagne and Crystals

As you will know from my previous post, I was in Edinburgh last week visiting Harvey Nichols. The store has a lot of great new things happening just now (including an overhaul of the restaurant early 2012) and most recently is the relaunch of the Nails Inc Champagne Nail Bar.

The Nail Bar has been opened up and two extra treatment stations have been added in order to create more space and really make the most of the great atmosphere provided by the beauty emporium that is the first floor. I love the new look; it's chic but fun and that can often be a hard combination to achieve. But then again, Nails Inc are renowned for creating fun polishes (they have just released the Gossip Girl collection as well as the magnet collection) which also come in chic, muted colours such as South Molton Street and Victoria.

We were lucky enough to be offered a complimentary treatment from the new nail bar, along with a glass of Champagne (which is standard with any treatment - totes my scene!) to enjoy while we were being pampered. The other press mostly chose gel polishes and the Gossip Girl range, but I decided to try something a little different - the Crystal Pedicure! That's right ladies - Swarovski crystals were applied all over my big toe nail! Danielle was my nail technician and she told me that a lot of brides-to-be get the Crystal Pedicure for their big day, and that some newly engaged girls like to get their ring finger nail encrusted with crystals. Danielle applied silver polish to the rest of my toes and told me not to be afraid to change the colour as the crystals would last for a good few weeks. Overall, I think the Crystal Pedicure is really great fun, a bit different and definitely something a bit more special than your average pedi. It's ghetto fabulous and I plan to werq it!

An Honest Review: Harvey Nichols Edinburgh Beyond MediSpa: Bioslimming

On Tuesday last week I was invited to Harvey Nichols Edinburgh to experience their new Bioslimming treatment. I arrived a bit early so browsed the Balenciaga and Helmut Lang skirts before heading up to Beyond MediSpa where the manager, Louise, greeted me and introduced me to my therapist, Kathryn. The spa is very compact, but very clean and bright - a good mix of clinical hygiene and modern, clean lines. The treatment itself was amazing, and if you want to invest any spare cash into your body, Bioslimming is definitely a treatment that works; I lost 9.2 centimetres from my waist to my thighs!

First, Kathryn gave me some very attractive disposable knickers to wear, and it was at this point that I realised she meant business. Kathryn applied the different products to my thighs, bum, back and tum, working hard to massage them into my skin using a rather vigorous technique - as she said, this is not a pampering treatment. Bioslimming is to get results, and for results you need to expect a bit of hard work. No pain, no gain!

So after she pummelled my butt, etc, she wrapped me up in BioFilm (looks very similar to clingfilm, but I was assured there was a difference) and left me beneath some cosy blankets to build up and retain heat. After 30 minutes, Kathryn returned to unwrap me and start the hardcore massage again but this time she used cooling products which contained menthol and eucalyptus. This felt invigorating against my skin and despite warning me that I would feel insanely cold, I actually thought it wasn't too bad. She then left me beneath the blankets for another 20/30 minutes (if you were having the recommended course of 6 treatments, you would get dressed at this point) to get maximum results. I was glad when Kathryn returned because I was FREEZING! Lying there, I felt very cold (to the point where my teeth chattered) but it was a strange sensation; somewhere between burning and tingling. Imagine if you got Vicks in your eye, that sort of nippy, cold, burny feeling that makes your eyes water and try to think how that would feel against your skin and inside your body. Very odd indeed, but obviously worth it because when Kathryn measured me I'd lost over 9 centimetres and the texture of my skin (yes, orange peel!) had improved significantly.

This is not a miracle treatment, but it definitely does improve the shape and feel of your body and I would sincerely recommend that anyone who has a problem area (or just wants to feel better ahead of a holiday or special occasion) should go to Harvey Nichols MediSpa for Bioslimming. The treatment can focus on any part of your body that you feel insecure about, from thighs and bum to waists to arms to love handles, and truly will make a difference to your self confidence levels. If I had a larger disposable income, I'd be going for the recommended maintenance regime of a full course of 6 treatments, followed by a monthly maintenance treatment. Until then, I might get Mr Man to pummel my butt, leave the heating off, and wrap me in clingfilm overnight!

After my treatment, I really did feel rather chilly so I treated myself to a skinny latte on the Forth Floor to warm me up - don't you just love the mugs?

You can purchase Bioslimming products which can be used as an alternative to the treatment - but one treatment equal a whole week of religious applications for the same level results. If you ask me, it's a lot easier to get the professionals to do it for you!

Shoe Love

On Tuesday I was invited along to Harvey Nichols Edinburgh for a few treat (more to come very soon!) but before visiting Edinburgh's finest designer department store, I popped into Valvona & Crolla for a skinny latte and biscotti. Mmmm. Love.

Once rebooted, I popped next door to Kurt Geiger. The jewel stand was the first to welcome me and on first look there were at least 3 pairs of wonderful, wonderful shoes that I wanted to take home. I didn't try any on (because that's when things go horribly wrong for my credit card) but I took some photos as a reminder of the most covetable styles.... just don't let me anywhere near the website!

A Tight Spot

I was recently gifted some very fancy hosiery. Now, I don't have the best legs for showcasing hosiery, so I asked the lovely Stevie to model these polka dot Pamela Mann tights for me - Stevie has legs that even Freja Beha would die for! Doesn't she look sensational?

Girls Just Want To Have Fun

You might say I'm a girly girl. As I type, I'm watching Sex and the City reruns (season 5, episode Luck Be An Old Lady) and painting my toe nails. I'm also lusting over this Lulu Guinness journal, which the designer created for Noble Macmillan. I've always loved to write - and I mean write, not type. I have a stack of around five notebooks on my night stand, and another three stashed in different handbags, and yet still I want more. Lulu Guinness does such great accessories and her latest creation is super cute but with that famous Lulu Guinness elegance - the grosgrain ribbon and embossed lip detail make for very chic note taking. I simply must have the red (it also comes in pink) notebook to slip into my Lulu Guinness shopper. Even when I'm suffering from writer's block, I can enjoy writing my autumn/winter wishlist in my gorgeous, gilt-edged journal.

Beauty Busters: Toni & Guy Classic Hairspray

Toni & Guy's Medium Hold Classic Hairspray smells amazing. That's the best thing about it, the smell. I hate when you use a bit of hairspray and for the rest of the day, it overpowers everything else from your favourite perfume to the fragrant smell of your fresh coffee in the morning. I think there's nothing worse than sitting beside someone on the bus or in a meeting (or whatever) and all you can smell is their hairspray which, annoyingly, out-does your £52 a bottle Black Orchid. How rude. Toni & Guy Classic Hairspray smells really, really nice but isn't overwhelming - once it's settled, it's a very light scent and only at the quick turn of your head!

The product itself is good for people who like a very light texture; it has a flexible hold, isn't sticky and doesn't harden into your hair. If you're looking for a hairspray to hold a style in place, you'd be better with something different because It's a very natural hairspray and is good for giving a bit of body without a strict, firm hold.

Toni & Guy is brilliant for natural, soft hair that has a bit of oomph.

Holly Willoughby's new ad campaign for Very is perfect - she's smokin' hot in every single picture without being vulgar or verging on soft porn. How she does it I'm not quite sure, but the reason we all love Holly is because she's fun, she's successful, she's beautiful (with a figure most women can relate to) but she's lovely too. She's the girl that every girl want to be best mates with and she's woman that men want to marry. She's perfect without being intimidating.

Recession Fabulous

Glamorous costume jewellery is a bit of a habit of mine. In particular, I'm attracted to pearls and diamante detail. Fun, cheap jewellery can transform a simple white t-shirt into something fabulous, while crystals and pearls compliment an evening look nicely. I'm not a scarf person, but I am a sucker for sequins and this scarf by Rose & Rose is perfect for upping the glamour stakes anytime, anywhere. Sequins have been huge for the last few seasons and with sequin jackets being the main focus at Dolce this season, this trend show no sign of slowing down. Beauty Busters: M&S Crimson Lipstick

I was kindly sent a sample of Marks and Spencer's Perfection Perfect Moisture Lipstick in Crimson, and although I love a fierce red lip, I hate my teeth so have only ever worn red lippy once (I was 23 and fearless!). So, when my friend KaKa asked me if I had a red lipstick she could borrow for a Saturday night out on the town, I had just the ticket! KaKa wore the M&S lipstick and (as always) what followed was an orthopaedically dangerous turning of heads!
